Re-root Canal Treatment
Save Your Tooth with Re-Root Canal Treatment
Reroot canal treatment can be redone, also known as retreatment. This is often necessary if the original treatment fails or if the tooth becomes re-infected. Retreatment involves removing the old filling, cleaning and disinfecting the canals, and placing a new filling.
Reasons for Retreatment
Incomplete Cleaning:
If the initial root canal treatment didn’t completely remove all infected tissue or if there were hidden canals that were missed.
Re-infection:
Even after a successful root canal, the tooth can become re-infected later.
Delayed Restoration:
If the tooth isn’t properly restored (e.g., with a crown or filling) soon after the root canal, it can become re-infected.
Poor Oral Hygiene:
New cavities or fractures on the treated tooth can expose the root canal to bacteria.
Failed Restoration:
A crack or loosening of the crown or filling can allow bacteria to enter the root canal.
Retreatment Process:
1. Access:
The dentist will make a small opening in the tooth to access the root canal.
2. Removal of Old Filling:
The old root canal filling material (usually gutta-percha) is removed.
3. Cleaning and Disinfecting:
The canals are thoroughly cleaned and disinfected to remove any remaining bacteria and debris.
4. Filling and Sealing:
New filling material is placed in the canals, and the tooth is sealed to prevent future infection.
5. Restoration:
The tooth is then restored with a filling or crown to protect it from future damage.
Success Rates:
Retreatment can be successful in saving the tooth, but the success rate is generally lower than the initial root canal treatment.
The success of retreatment depends on various factors, including the severity of the infection, the ability to access and clean all canals, and the patient’s overall oral health.
