Fluoride varnish for adults
Fluoride varnish is a quick preventive treatment we use for adults as well as children. For adults, it is usually worth having once the risk of decay starts to rise.
As we get older, gums can recede and leave the roots of the teeth exposed. Root surfaces are softer than enamel and decay more easily. Some medicines also reduce the flow of saliva, which normally helps to protect the teeth.
Fluoride varnish strengthens the surface of the tooth and makes it more resistant to the acid produced by plaque bacteria. It can also help very early decay to harden again before a filling is needed.
Who is it for?
We may suggest fluoride varnish if you:
- have receding gums or exposed roots, which become more common with age
- have sensitive teeth, as the varnish can help to reduce sensitivity
- have a dry mouth, for example because of medication
- have crowns, bridges or a lot of fillings
- wear a brace or clear aligners
- have had new decay in the last couple of years
How it is applied
We clean and dry your teeth, then paint a thin layer of varnish onto the surfaces that need it. The varnish sets as soon as it touches saliva, and the whole thing takes a few minutes. It does not hurt. Your teeth may feel a little sticky until you next brush. We will tell you how long to wait before eating, drinking or brushing. Please tell us about any allergies before we start, particularly to sticking plasters, as some varnishes contain colophony (a pine resin).
How often should I have it?
That depends on your risk. For adults at higher risk of decay, twice a year is common, usually at the same visit as your check-up or hygiene appointment. We may also prescribe a higher-strength fluoride toothpaste for use at home.
Before any treatment starts
You do not have to know which treatment is right before you book. A dentist from our general dentistry team will examine your teeth, tell you what they find and explain the options in plain language, including what happens if you wait. We agree a plan with you, and only start once you are happy with it.
