Dental surgery covers a wide range of treatments, from tooth extractions to dental implants (permanent replacements for lost or failing teeth). Many people are nervous at the prospect of dental surgery, but techniques have advanced greatly in recent years and our practice is committed to caring, gentle dentistry and while you may experience a little discomfort with some treatments, we take care to make them as pain-free as possible.
Extractions and other surgical procedure are carried out by our experienced, qualified dental surgeon Dr Arie Yuffa BSc, Den (Ven) and in most cases are carried out under local anesthetic, meaning you may feel some pressure but no pain.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction
Extracting wisdom teeth or third molars is one of the most common dental procedures in the UK. Wisdom teeth are usually the last teeth to come through and can sometimes become impacted if there is not enough space in your mouth for them to fully develop.
If they don’t cause any problems, impacted wisdom teeth do not need to be removed, but they can cause dental problems including pain or discomfort, as well as decay or gum disease because food and bacteria can get trapped around the edge of these teeth, which can be difficult to clean.
Patients experiencing problems with their wisdom teeth should contact the practice straight away. If we need to remove a wisdom tooth, we will first numb your gum with local anesthetic before gently and carefully removing your tooth. After an extraction we will also give you aftercare advice to follow, to help prevent any complications such as dry socket, which can cause discomfort and an unpleasant taste in your mouth after tooth extraction. Following aftercare advice will help to prevent this.
Other Tooth Extraction
Teeth sometimes need to be removed in cases of advanced decay, gum disease or in preparation for some orthodontic treatments, as well as before dental implants and dentures.
The procedure for such extractions is similar to wisdom tooth extraction, and is usually carried out under local anesthetic.
Dental implants
Dental implants are bionic tooth roots made of titanium that support permanent replacement teeth in the form of crowns, bridges or fixed dentures. They are placed directly in the jaw bone and help to prevent problems associated with missing teeth including bone resorbtion and receding gums.
